Description
Ribes sanguineum (Red flowering currant)
Late winter blossoms welcome the change in seasons
Drooping clusters of red to pink flowers bloom in late winter or early spring before the 3-lobed leaves open out. Berries are blue-black with a white waxy coating and are favorites with birds although not especially tasty to humans. Hummingbirds appreciate the early season nectar. Found mostly in western Washington but also in a Chelan and Kittitas Counties. Photo by Ben Legler
