Description
Ribes sanguineum (Red flowering currant)
Late winter blossoms welcome the change in seasons
Drooping clusters of red to pink flowers bloom in late winter or early spring before the 3-lobed leaves open out. Berries are blue-black with a white waxy coating and are favorites with birds although not especially tasty to humans. Hummingbirds appreciate the early season nectar. Found mostly in western Washington but also in Chelan and Kittitas Counties. Photo by Ben Legler
