Description
Cornus stolonifera (Red osier dogwood)
Striking red twigs
Beautiful red branches are a welcome color through winter and early spring before being covered by soft green foliage and white flowers. This is a multi-stemmed shrub that grows in moist areas near streams and rivers. To keep the color brightest, remove some of the oldest stems each spring before it starts to leaf out. Prune branches away from the ground to prevent them from rooting into the soil. Photo by James Reveal.
